The Bad News

The Bad News is based on the painting of the same name, an oil on canvas by Belmiro de Almeida. The original painting is part of the Museu Mineiro collection and is included in its permanent exhibition. The short film delves into the fascinating relationship between Cinema and the Visual Arts. Belmiro de Almeida (1858–1935) was one of the most important Brazilian artists of the early 20th century. In The Bad News, he seeks to move us through the woman’s emotion. Dated 1897—the year the capital moved from Ouro Preto to Belo Horizonte—the painting gave rise to a popular interpretation that the “bad news” was the change of the capital.
