The Holy Visitation

2006  |  HD Digital  |  26min  |  Documentary

Synopsis

The documentary addresses the first visit of the Holy Office to Brazil at the end of the 16th century. Portugal’s Inquisition—then under Spanish rule—thus reached the colonies. In search of errors of faith, the Holy Visitation expanded its persecution of heretics, primarily the New Christians—Jews converted by force—but also those who deviated from behaviors permitted by Catholic dogma. Historian Ronaldo Vainfas leads a reconstruction of the confessions of nine women before the Visitor. Through them, we are transported to Brazil’s dawn. Featuring writer Eduardo Galeano and singer Fortuna.
